Youth Service International’s Leadership Camps help boys develop into fine, hard-working and courageous men who can be leaders among their peers. The camp’s full and well-balanced schedule includes daily Mass, rosary, academic classes, motivational talks, sports and games.

The Staff of the Leadership Camp consists of directors, teachers and counselors. The directors are professional men who have experience running camps and other character-forming activities for young men. Teachers are workers and educators who wish to pass on their expertise and their sense of professional ethics. Counselors (most of whom are former campers) are mature university and high school students who have dedicated time to preparing the camp and who know how to inspire a sense of trust and confidence. The chaplain of the camp is a priest of Opus Dei.
Classes: Each morning campers attend lively classes in which the boys learn to express themselves clearly and persuasively in writing and in speech. Different from ordinary school classes, these short courses are informal sessions where students are encouraged to think with precision and work with diligence. With daily instruction on Catholic doctrine, the boys acquire the strong framework of moral truth that they’ll need in order to have a good and lasting influence on society.
Spiritual Development and Character Formation: In addition to the catechism classes, the boys have the opportunity to attend Mass each morning and recite the rosary together in the evening. At any time during the day a camper can seek out the chaplain for the sacrament of confession or private counsel.
Each evening the boys receive talks on virtues such as loyalty, hard work, obedience, piety, courage, and generosity, the traits of a true leader. The campers are also helped by the counselors to put into effect what they hear in the talks – for instance, to make good use of their time at camp, to keep their cabins clean, to make friends with other campers, and to live charitably with everyone.
Sports: Each afternoon the boys participate in organized team sports such as soccer, dodge ball, baseball, kick ball, water polo, ultimate Frisbee, touch football, hockey, speed ball, and basketball. Through athletics, the boys develop a healthy spirit of competition and build friendship with fellow campers and counselors. After sports campers can attend a variety of activities including swimming, canoeing, fishing, archery, reading and writing, water polo, hiking, and games.
Camp Location: The YSI Leadership Camp is held at Camp St. Andrew (N41.60490 W75.89635) in Tunkhannock, PA, a forty-minute drive from Scranton, PA. The camp is set on a grassy hill surrounded by forests, fields and a fresh-water lake. Facilities include over a dozen cabins, a dining hall, a chapel, a pool, sports fields, indoor and outdoor basketball cours, and an outdoor classroom.
Counselors: are high school and college men who volunteer a part of their summer to plan and run each camp. Campers are boys entering grades 5 through 8 who apply to attend one of the sessions.
