“The happiness of the people we met, and their gratitude for our little time spent and work that we completed, had a profound effect on me.  I think this experience will influence the way I live my life, [and] the choices that I make.” Charles L., Summer 2008

“The trip itself was very well structured with a good balance of work, spiritual development and recreational activity which made the time pass all too quickly.  It was by far the greatest trip I have ever experienced…” Leo N., Summer 2007

Summer Service Project in Mexico

Join the Mexico Summer Service Project in Morelos, Mexico and you will have an ideal opportunity to live solidarity by serving those who are poor and less fortunate. You will do so with your friendship, your knowledge, and your hard work. At the same time, you will learn a great deal from the Mexican people, their culture, and their way of life.

The Program

Teaching: Participants will be paired up to team-teach English to a group of young Mexican boys from El Peñón School. There will be two 55-minute periods every day. Work Projects: Construction projects aimed at securing basic needs for indigent families will be organized in the surrounding towns. Participants will spend 3-4 hours a day on these projects. On weekends, participants will have a chance to go on cultural trips and hiking expeditions.

Eligibility: The Summer Service Project is primarily opened to high school boys who will be entering juniors in the Fall of the upcoming school year and are interested in deepening their commitment to service. Interested students should carefully follow the requirements of the application process. Knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not required.

Accommodations: We will be staying at El Peñón, a rural area school whose spiritual attention is entrusted to the Prelature of Opus Dei.
