From participants who helped with service projects in Mexico:“The happiness of the people we met, and their gratitude for our little time spent and work that we completed, had a profound effect on me. I think this experience will influence the way I live my life, [and] the choices that I make.” Charles L., Summer 2008
“The trip itself was very well structured with a good balance of work, spiritual development and recreational activity which made the time pass all too quickly. It was by far the greatest trip I have ever experienced…” Leo N., Summer 2007
Summer Service Project in Perú
June 30 - July 20, 2014
Join the Perú Summer Service Project and you will have an ideal opportunity to live solidarity by serving those who are poor and less fortunate. You will do so with your friendship, your knowledge, and your hard work. At the same time, you will learn a great deal from the Peruvian people, their culture, and their way of life.
Every day, participants will split their time working on a construction project and teaching at the village school.
Teaching: Participants will be paired up to team-teach English and Catechism to a group of young Peruvian children in the province of Yauyos.
Work Projects: Construction projects aimed at helping the local villagers will be organized in the surrounding towns. Participants will spend 3-4 hours a day on these projects.
On weekends, participants will have a chance to go on cultural trips and hiking expeditions. The daily schedule will include Mass and times of prayer.
Eligibility: The Summer Service Project is open primarily to high school boys who will be entering juniors and seniors in the Fall of 2014 and are keen on deepening their commitment to service. Interested students should carefully follow the requirements of the application process. Knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not required.
Accommodations: Our home will be a residence owned by the Instituto Rural de Valle Grande (www.irvg.org), an organization which promotes research and educational activities for agricultural workers in the province of Yauyos. The residence is located in the village of Llapai.
Program Cost: Program Fee: $785, which covers all expenses of our 3-week stay in Perú. This fee, however, does not cover the cost of the plane ticket. The price range will be $800 - $1000. YSI will coordinate air travel arrangements once you are accepted to the program.
